Slurred speech and stumbling that persist until the day after drinking are not matters to be taken lightly by assuming you simply have not sobered up yet. They can be serious warning signs sent by your brain. Modern medicine classifies alcohol, namely ethanol, as a neurotoxic substance. Once alcohol enters the body, it directly affects the central nervous system. Although it may initially feel like a stimulant, it actually acts as a central nervous system depressant that suppresses brain function.
This phenomenon occurs because it disrupts various neurotransmitter systems in the brain. In particular, it activates GABA receptors that inhibit brain activity and interferes with the action of glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter. As a result, judgment, memory, and motor coordination deteriorate, and dysarthria, in which speech becomes slurred, can occur. This is precisely what is commonly described as getting tongue-tied.
What is even more serious is that chronic alcohol intake can cause permanent damage to brain structure and function. A representative example is alcoholic brain injury. On an MRI scan, brain atrophy, especially frontal lobe damage, can be observed. The frontal lobe is responsible for higher-order cognitive functions such as judgment, planning, and impulse control, so damage to this area inevitably leads to significant difficulties in daily life.
Furthermore, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, which commonly occurs in individuals with chronic alcohol dependence, cannot be overlooked. This condition develops because alcohol impairs the absorption of vitamin B1 (thiamine). It initially appears as Wernicke encephalopathy, accompanied by mental confusion, gait disturbance, and abnormal eyeball movements. If it worsens, it can progress to Korsakoff psychosis, characterized by severe memory loss and disorientation. Stumbling and impaired judgment are closely connected to this.
In addition, when liver function deteriorates due to alcoholic liver disease, toxins that fail to be detoxified, especially ammonia, flow into the brain, causing hepatic encephalopathy. This can lead to confusion, personality changes, and in severe cases, even coma. Alcohol goes far beyond a simple hangover and fundamentally threatens the health of our brain. Abnormal brain signs that continue into the next morning are critical warnings that must never be ignored.
